Common Core Shark Subtraction and Zoo Keepers! Oh, My!

Common Core Standards adhere to the preface that higher level thinking of the mathematical process vs. just memorizing math facts is what our teaching objectives should emphasize.  This lesson began with one of Dr. Jean's songs on Opposites!?!  Yes, using our kiddos prior knowledge was utilized to explain the difference b/w addition and subtraction.  See below as our Smarties made 3-D Shark Subtraction stories!  A mini-paper plate was used to make teeth.

PS:  Please see our Zoo Keepers below.  Our Zoo Keepers were our culminating activity for our Zoo Unit.  On the back, our kiddos wrote facts that interested them about their favorite zoo animal.  Yes... we try our best to make our teaching  all about them and their interests!
